Remember the black hole of super cool tech? Last week we identified the problem with your photos and data being trapped on obsolete tech. But, now you’re thinking identifying the problem doesn’t help solve the problem. So let’s fix it!
First, this will take some time on your part, but if you do it as you go, it won’t be a huge mountain you have to scale. Kind of like laundry.
1. Back up your devices. Phone. Camera. Laptop.
If you take photos with your phone, hook it up to your laptop or desktop and sync it. That will save your photos automatically and it doesn’t take a huge amount of time. You could leave it there, but to be safe, go on to step 2.
2. Back up your photos on your laptop to a thumb drive or an external hard drive.
Thumb drives now have a huge amount of storage space. But wait, didn’t we talk about super cool tech becoming not so cool in a very short amount of time? Absolutely! Thats why I store my photos on two external hard drives. Imagine having to tell my clients that I lost their photos when my computer crashed! That still doesn’t solve the whole back hole problem. So, step 3…
3. PRINT. YOUR. PHOTOS. Super cool tech means printing your photos is now affordable and easy to do yourself. The solution comes in a device that is only a little bigger than my hand. A compact photo printer like the Canon SELPHY. For $99 you can start printing the photos in no time. All you have to do is download the free app and connect your phone by bluetooth. It prints a 4x6 full color glossy goodness of a photo. Easy peasy and done in seconds.
The SELPHY is just one of these types of printers. There are smaller and less expensive printers, but the trade-off is smaller photos.
Now that you’ve printed the photos, store them in an album or an archival box. You have now preserved your memories in several different places, so if something catastrophic happens your photos are safe from the cold, dark abyss of the black hole of super cool tech.
