You are standing in front of your closet with the same question whispering through your mind that whispers through it every day. Every. Single. Day. What to wear? Its three words. But it's a huge question that causes no small amount of stress, especially when it comes to having your photo taken. It’s also a question I understandably get asked a lot. Don’t worry though. We’ve got this. One of the services included in your session is a Style & Concept Consultation. In your consultation, I’ll come to your home, help you go through your wardrobe and together we’ll choose what will work best for you. Here are some guidelines:
First, always choose clothes that you feel good in. This will help you project confidence, which is important for a business photo but will also help you be relaxed during a family photo.
Second, we all know that dark colors are slimming, but don’t worry if you don’t have a closet full of black clothes. Navy, gray or brown will also give you the same effect. Add a v-neck or drape-neck top to elongate your neck to take it to the next level.
Tip for Women: Try a wrap dress or blouse to flatter your waist line.
Third, large, bold patterns can be distracting and can date a photo. Small, subtle patterns can add a modern flair and solids can add a timeless element to your portrait.
Tip for Men: Choose a dress shirt with color like blue or burgundy. This will help detail, like texture, from getting lost. If you choose a white shirt, layer it with a sweater or suit jacket.
Fourth, the success of your portrait depends on what you want to say about you and your business. For example: The photo of an attorney will be different than a contractor. They need to project different things. So, while a suit is a perfect choice for the attorney, it’s not necessarily the best choice for the contractor.
Last, long sleeves are better than short sleeves or tank tops. The difference in light and color between your skin and your clothes can draw the eye away from your face, which is where you want it. If you have a shirt with no sleeves that you’re dying to wear, you can layer it with a draped sweater. Or, if you are a fitness enthusiast or a body builder and got guns for days, let’s highlight them!
Very few What to Wear rules are set in stone. There are always exceptions and that’s where the Style & Concept Consultation comes in. Together, we’ll decide which rules fit you and which rules we can happily break. Less stress means portraits that you are going to love.
